Clearing clutter is a chore that most of us tend to put off, however clearing those unwanted items can actually be an emotionally cleansing experience, as well as a physical one. It can awaken, or increase creativity, whilst giving the cleared, de-cluttered area a clean, fresh, new feel.
Maybe you are a secret hoarder, stashing items under the general label of ‘I may need it one day’ or ‘it may come in useful one day’. Perhaps you think ‘I hate that item but my mum/friend/partner bought that’. Whatever your reasons; binning, recycling, donating or selling those items could have so many benefits.
Make some extra money
Clearing that excess clutter and those unwanted items can top up your finances. There are several places online where, for a small fee, you can list your items for a set fee or for people to bid on. Places include Ebay (for any items), Amazon (for books, DVD’s etc) and Music Magpie (for CD’s and DVD’s).
Alternatively, you could load the items in your car and have a stall at the nearest car boot sale. Either way, you could end up with extra space and some extra money in your pocket.
Help local charities
If you don’t have time to do a car boot sale, any of your local charities would gladly accept your unwanted items. Whether you want to support your local animal rescue, aged-related or medical-related charity, the choice really is yours. If they have a local shop, take your unwanted items in. Otherwise support more than one charity by separating items like towels, blankets, pillows and throws etc – as they are always needed at the local cat or dog rescue centres (RSPCA, Dog or Cats Trust etc) and giving the remaining items to the local charity.
Create some space
Clearing clutter can help the room feel more spacious, less chaotic and more peaceful. This, in turn, will help you feel calmer, relaxed and generally happier. A clutter-free, tidy space can also make you more productive and even awaken or increase your creativity.
Create a fresh flow of energy
According to the Chinese feng shui system, clutter causes low, stagnant and confusing energy. This can drain the energy from you, leaving you feeling tired and depressed. Depending on the area of your home where the clutter is located, it can even block the positive flow of events in certain areas of your life. That is why the room can feel so much better, lighter and even fresher, after a good clear out.
